2023 J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay
The 2023 J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay, hailing from the cool-climate Arroyo Seco appellation in Monterey, California, is a classic expression of Chardonnay that reflects the region’s unique terroir. Grown primarily on Elder loam soils interspersed with riverstones deposited by the Arroyo Seco River, the vines benefit from a shallow soil depth of one to four feet, which naturally balances vine growth and fruit development. The cool climate, influenced by Monterey Bay’s foggy mornings and evening breezes, extends the growing season, preserving the grape’s natural acidity and enhancing its varietal intensity. The 2023 season was notably cool, with summer and early fall temperatures hovering around 80°F, ideal for ripening Chardonnay. Harvest began on October 2 and concluded on November 13, yielding a wine composed of eight Chardonnay clones—4, 5, 17, 76, 95, 96, 809, and Hyde-Wente—each contributing to its layered complexity.
This Chardonnay offers a rich and inviting profile, with aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, and subtle baking spices. On the palate, it delivers a creamy texture balanced by vibrant acidity, showcasing flavors of Meyer lemon, tropical fruit, and hints of hazelnut and oak from barrel aging sur lie. The wine’s smooth mouthfeel and long, nuanced finish make it versatile for pairing, complementing dishes like fresh seafood risotto, mussels in white wine sauce, or chicken piccata. Certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, it reflects J. Lohr’s commitment to sustainable practices. With a rating of 92 points from Wine Spectator and 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, this wine is crafted for immediate enjoyment but can age gracefully for up to five years.
